An Artistic Legacy: Growing Up Between Sydney and Seoul

Born in Sydney, Australia on January 16, 1998, Yerin Ha was the daughter of South Korean immigrants. Acting ran through her veins; her parents had known each other in drama school back in South Korea. But perhaps the greatest influence on her young life was her maternal grandmother, Son Sook, who is a well-renowned theater and screen actress in South Korea (also famous in contemporary times for starring in Netflix’s The Glory).

Ha watched as her grandmother took the stage as the star in her raw and emotional one-woman play, bringing tears to the eyes of the viewers and making them feel better. Ha realized then that acting is not merely entertaining; it is empathy.

Yerin Ha grew up in Sydney's North Shore as one of only a few Asian people in her community, making her inherently shy. Since she thought it would be hard to make a place for herself in an Australian television world where there is no diversity, her parents encouraged her to study in her homeland.

The Breakthrough: Spielberg, Space Politics, and Prestige TV

Ha did not have to wait long after graduating to begin making her mark on the world. In 2019, she made her professional acting debut on the stage alongside actress Mia Wasikowska in a performance of the play Lord of the Flies by the Sydney Theatre Company.

It was in the same year that she gained worldwide recognition for an incredible breakthrough role, which earned her the notice of producer Steven Spielberg, when she portrayed the rebellious insurgent Kwan Ha in the expensive Paramount+ science fiction version of the video game Halo (2022-2024).

Making History in the 'Ton: Bridgerton Season 4

Whereas her science-fiction genre made her a renowned dramatic actress, being chosen to play the leading character in the fourth season of Bridgerton pushed her straight into the stratosphere of popular culture.

The season is an adaptation of Julia Quinn's novel An Offer From a Gentleman, where the iconic storyline of Cinderella receives a modern touch and becomes diverse. At the moment when Ha landed the part, she was having coffee in Gangnam with her mother. As soon as she stepped out of the café to receive the news, she started to jump around the streets in delight – making her mother go through a hysterical experience of excited and happy tears.

A Historical Decision: For the first time in the history of the production, the creators approached Ha and happily changed the last name of the character from "Beckett" to "Baek," in order to fit her Korean heritage.

With Luke Thompson playing the part of Benedict Bridgerton, Ha managed to impress millions of people with her performance as the mesmerizing lady in silver.
