Robert Downey Jr. is Returns to Doctor Doom in Avengers Doomsday.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to undergo its biggest narrative turn yet. In a plot twist that has reverberated through popular culture, Robert Downey Jr., whose character had been crafted over a decade into being the epitome of morality and the savior of the Marvel Universe as Tony Stark, is back—but this time not as a hero. Rather, he will take the role of villain, wearing an iron mask and destroying everything as Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr. is Returns to Doctor Doom

Set to release on December 18, 2026, the film marks a huge turning point for Marvel Studios.

First Look: The Iconic Mask Revealed

New promotional materials have turned the entire internet crazy by revealing to the viewers the way in which Downey's depiction of the ruthless dictator of Latveria would look like once brought to life. One of the former Directors of Visual Development at Marvel Studios, Andy Park, revealed an amazing piece of celebratory concept art.

Note the design in this piece of artwork: the film version of the mask in Doom remains true to its comic-accurate design that is lined with rivets and made of threatening metal with a cold green light from his eyes. On either side of the intimidating presence of Doom are important multiverse characters such as Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and a battle-scarred Chris Evans.

From Savior to Sovereign: Why the Casting Works

Robert Downey Jr. has been the actual face of Marvel for years. The transformation from an ultimate hero to an ultimate villain is one of the best meta-narratives ever and takes full advantage of the fans' affection.

As observed above when he was making himself known to everyone through this theatrical revelation, Downey is embracing the theatricality necessary to play Victor Von Doom. The green cloak and iron mask is not just a costume but represents a darker version of the tech-genius character Downey portrayed as Iron Man.

The Multiverse Paradigm

But how is Tony Stark’s face that of Victor Von Doom? Without disclosing too many details about how this would happen within the Marvel universe, the present Multiverse Saga is just right for that purpose. He can either be a shadowy variation of Stark who chose the path of world domination, or an all-new character who just happens to have the same face in another universe. It is going to be extremely difficult for the other Avengers to handle.

An Unprecedented Cast Size

Avengers: Doomsday will be an unprecedented film in terms of being a cinematic event similar to that of Avengers: Endgame. As part of the marketing campaign for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel is going to do a special re-release of Avengers: Endgame towards the end of September 2026 to remind people about how Downey’s story ended.

The massive size of the cast covers many eras of Marvel films:
